A Course in Meditation and Self-Hypnosis
![]()
I have facilitated six-hour courses in
meditation since June of 1995. I have thoroughly enjoyed these courses and have
received some great feedback from the participants (see testimonials below).
Recently, I completed the 100-hour academic program and the casework requirement
leading to the designation
of Certified Consulting Hypnotist.
While studying hypnosis, I discovered that the states of meditation and hypnosis can be very similar, and at times the same. Both can relax the body deeply, heighten the subconscious mind and senses, lower metabolism, generate alpha brain waves, and assist us to be more receptive to suggestion. This prompted me to add a couple of sessions to the original meditation course by adding elements dealing with self-hypnosis, the law of attraction, affirmation development and use, visualization, and to explain the many therapeutic uses of Hypnosis.
Below, I have explained a little about meditation and some things about hypnosis. As well, I have provided some details for the new course and some testimonials from the former one.
What Is Meditation?
Meditation is a simple,
natural, and effortless technique for achieving a state of deep
relaxation while the mind remains alert. It is not about
religion, philosophy, or contemplation. During meditation,
metabolism drops significantly and brain wave activity slows to
the alpha state. Regular meditation has a cumulative effect and
improves overall performance and well-being.
Who Should Meditate?
Adults, teenagers, and children
can all learn to meditate. Meditation can benefit anyone
interested in improving competence, happiness and quality of
life.
Why Meditate?
Those who meditate on a regular
basis report that many areas of their lives have improved. As
well, science has demonstrated that meditation produces a great
many benefits. Some of the areas in which gains are reported are:
Stress management -- Self-esteem -- Job performance -- Interpersonal relations -- Resistance to disease -- Creativity -- Academic performance -- Athletic performance -- Learning ability -- Cardiovascular efficiency -- Emotional stability -- Metabolic stability -- Nervous system efficiency -- Perceptual ability -- Sociability
Regular meditators also report decreases in the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and non-prescription drugs, as well as decreases in excessive weight, high blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety, and depression.
Hypnosis is a simple, natural state of
consciousness in which we become deeply relaxed and more open to suggestion. In
hypnosis, we are fully aware of what is happening and of what we are saying or
doing. No one can control your mind or make you do anything that you wouldn't
otherwise be willing to do. Actually, you hypnotize yourself and the hypnotist
really only directs or facilitates the process. No one can be hypnotized
if they don't want to be.
Hypnosis has many helpful applications. Some of them are:
To me, hypnosis and meditation are similar states of consciousness, and each can
take us to different depths of this state. The main difference between the two
states lies in how they are used. Hypnosis usually includes an agenda where we
program the subconscious mind to improve some aspect of life, e.g. entrench a
new habit, eliminate an undesirable behaviour, extinguish an addiction,
etc. Meditation seems to be more passive and can take us to a level of
consciousness where we can transcend thought and achieve a state of outstanding
peace and tranquility.
